What 2016 SUV Reviews Say About the Honda Pilot

  • 2016 Honda Pilot

Most drivers do a fair bit of research before even visiting a dealership, and we want to help. We’ve brought together some of the top 2016 SUV reviews that cover the 2016 Honda Pilot—including our own review—so that you can learn all about this crossover and why it’s so popular among Albany area families.

Our Review

When drivers ask for our review of the Pilot, we hand them the keys. Since you might want to know a little bit about Honda’s eight-passenger, family-friendly SUV before you visit a Capital Region Honda Dealer for a test drive, we’ll give you a quick overview of its specs and features. Just know that we think this is a vehicle best experienced from behind the wheel.

The 2016 Pilot has five well-appointed trim levels that make it easy for a driver to find what they want in a family or a work vehicle:

Pilot LX

LX: Priced at $30,145 (MSRP)* on front-wheel drive models, the base Pilot comes with Bluetooth for phone and audio, a multi-angle rearview camera, a 4.2-inch display screen, push-button start, and your choice of front- or all-wheel drive.

Pilot EX

EX: Stepping up to the next trim, the EX is priced at $32,580 (MSRP)* for front-wheel drive models and has options of all-wheel drive and Honda Sensing available. Standard features include an 8-inch touchscreen display, smart entry, HondaLink telematics, and more.

Pilot EX-L

EX-L: The mid-range trim also has all-wheel drive and Honda Sensing available, with front-wheel drive models priced at $36,055 (MSRP).* Leather upholstery, heated front seating, and a power tailgate are just the start of this SUV’s amenities.

Pilot Touring

Touring: One step from the top, the Touring trim’s front-wheel drive model is priced at $41,170 (MSRP)* and already includes Honda Sensing as standard. Other features include satellite-linked navigation, a 540-watt premium stereo, and new 20-inch alloy wheels.

Pilot EliteElite: At the top of the line, the Elite trim comes equipped with all-wheel drive from the start and is priced at $46,570 (MSRP).* It includes front heated and ventilated seating, second-row heated captain’s chairs, a panoramic roof, and much more.

Each Pilot is powered by a 3.5L V6 engine with 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque, the 2016 Pilot LX FWD models earn an EPA-estimated 27 highway and 19 city mpg for 22 mpg combined.* That’s a more powerful and more efficient engine than the competing 2016 Toyota Highlander.

If you’re heading out on a weekend adventure, the Pilot can tow up to 3,500 pounds (5,000 pounds on AWD models), and Honda makes a wide variety of accessories to outfit the roof rails for skis, bikes, canoes, and more. The competing 2016 Ford Explorer only manages a 2,000-pound towing capacity.

Whether you drive the top-of-the-line Elite, the base-level LX, or a middle trim, we think you’ll be impressed by the elegance and power that comes in a Pilot.

The Critics’ 2016 Honda Pilot Reviews

If you were reading our review and thinking that we are clearly fans of the Honda lineup and the Pilot, you were right. We can’t escape being fans of Honda vehicles, so we want to share some key 2016 Honda Pilot reviews from top auto critic sites:

  • Cars.com said “The 2016 Honda Pilot has climbed to the top of the three-row SUV class, delivering all the room, comfort, safety features and versatility that make the potholed roads of parenting just a tiny bit smoother.”
  • Left Lane News commented on the performance, saying “The Pilot offers a nice blend of performance and economy, but our biggest takeaway was the SUV’s outstanding comfort and noise isolation. Honda stripped more than 280 pounds from the Pilot’s waistline, but you’d never guess that from the driver’s seat. That’s not because the Pilot is heavy or ponderous to drive, it’s not, but because it just feels so solid.”
  • Kelley Blue Book compared the Pilot to a luxury crossover with “Yet as stark as the contrast is outside, it’s the interior that truly surprises. Gone is the hard plastic on every surface, replaced with high-end materials, soft-touch surfaces, and satin finishes. It really does look and feel great, to the point that we wonder if it could steal sales from Honda’s upscale Acura MDX.”
  • Edmunds weighed in on the whole package, saying “The improvements made to the 2016 Honda Pilot make it a strong contender in the three-row crossover class … few match its combination of passenger comfort and utility.”

  • Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick+ (for 2016) when equipped with the new Honda Sensing safety features****
