Kia described their subcompact hatchback as “functional,” and that certainly caused us to do a double take. While the 2016 Kia Rio mpg numbers make it more competitive than some vehicles, the fact that “functional” is Kia’s chosen word to describe the Rio is telling, especially in a world where Albany drivers have the 2016 Honda Fit available.
Not only is the Fit fuel efficient and spacious, it’s sporty and fun to drive as well. It shows that a small or even a subcompact car doesn’t have to be boring or merely “functional.” It can be a joy to drive. And with the fuel economy ratings of the Fit, you won’t have to feel guilty when it’s time to fill up.
Is the Kia Rio a Gas Guzzler?
The 2016 Kia Rio mpg ratings fall short of the 2016 Honda Fit by a pretty significant margin, so much so that we think you should just see them for yourself:
- Each 2016 Kia Rio is rated at 37 highway mpg and 27 city mpg, and while this does make it one of the more efficient cars around Albany, it doesn’t stand a chance against the Fit.
- A 2016 Honda Fit LX with CVT is a proud and sporty subcompact car, sticking true to the class’s reputation for efficiency by earning an EPA-estimated 41 highway mpg and 33 city mpg.*
Now, those numbers are closer than if you were to compare the Fit to a pickup truck or a minivan, but that’s a pretty large difference for two vehicles in the same class. For some perspective, a 2016 Honda Accord LX Sedan with CVT is rated at an EPA-estimated 37 highway mpg* while giving drivers more power and more space than the Kia Rio.
If you’re OK driving a car that gets 37 highway mpg, we suggest going all out with the recently revamped Accord. And if you’d rather drive a subcompact, why settle for one like the Kia Rio, which has the fuel economy of a midsize sedan? The Fit is the smart and easy choice.
