The 2017 Honda Fit Safety Features: Engineered for Prevention and Protection

  • 2017 Honda Fit

Modern cars should care just as much about preventing accidents as protecting their passengers during them, and the 2017 Honda Fit safety features are designed to do just that. Albany drivers looking for a new subcompact, be sure to read on and discover for yourself the active and passive safety features that led the NHTSA to award the 2017 Fit a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Safety Rating.*

Active Safety Features

The 2017 Honda Fit safety features are some of the most advanced in its class, giving Albany drivers access to a wide range of standard and available active safety features—technologies that can help the driver focus on the road and actively avoid an accident. The Fit’s active safety features include:

Honda Fit Rearview Camera

Multi-Angle Rearview Camera: Simply shift into reverse and the standard rearview camera broadcasts its display on the Fit’s screen, with guidelines for easy backing up. Take advantage of top-down, normal, and wide-angle views; EX and EX-L trims also have dynamic guidelines.

Honda Fit Lanewatch

Honda LaneWatch: This available feature mounts a camera below the passenger-side mirror, which broadcasts its view onto the in-dash screen at the push of a button or when signaling so the driver can see beyond what the mirror shows.

Honda Fit Vehicle Stability Assist

Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA): This feature, complete with traction control, is standard on all Fit models. VSA tracks the position of the tires and steering wheel to detect if the driver is experiencing understeer, oversteer, or a loss of traction, adjusting vehicle performance to compensate and return control to the driver.

Honda Fit Daytime Running Lights

Daytime Running Lights: You can’t control how others drive, but you can make the Fit more visible. Standard daytime running lights brighten the front of the Fit and make it easier for other divers to see—and avoid!

Honda Fit Tire Pressure Monitoring System

Tire Pressure Monitoring System: Driving on an under-inflated tire can lead to erratic performance and damage the sidewall, risking a blowout. The Tire Pressure Monitoring System alerts the driver when one or more tires need attention due to low pressure.

Honda Fit Advanced Braking System

Advanced Braking Systems: Anti-lock brakes are, of course, standard on the Fit, automatically pumping the brakes during hard braking situations to keep the wheels from locking. Electronic Brake Distribution ensures all four brakes apply the right force to slow the car down evenly, and Brake Assist senses when hard braking occurs and deploys the maximum brake force to slow or stop the Fit.

Passive Safety Features

Not all accidents can be avoided, and a car needs more than active safety features. It needs to be prepared to protect its occupants during a collision. Passive safety features are engineered into the Fit to help mitigate the damage of a collision and generally keep occupants safe, including:

  • Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) Body Structure: Honda is so committed to safety that the very skeleton of the Fit is a safety feature, reinforced in common crash zones, built with crumple areas, and generally designed to direct energy from an accident away from passengers.
  • Three-Point Seat Belts: Each of the Fit’s five seats features a three-point seat belt to secure you in the event of an accident. Front seats feature an automatic tensioning system as well as a seat belt reminder so passengers know to buckle up before driving off.
  • Airbags: Dual-stage multi-threshold airbags, SmartVent front side airbags, and side curtain airbags (with built-in rollover sensor) deploy with force to cushion and reduce the risk of injury during an accident.
  • Child-Proof Rear Door Locks: Each Fit includes rear door locks that allow the doors to be opened only from the outside, preventing curious hands from tugging at the handle and freeing themselves from the backseat.
  • LATCH Safety Anchors: LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) is one of the most common child safety seat anchor systems, letting you lock a car seat into position and secure it in seconds. LATCH anchors are found on all rear seats of the Fit.

Safety Ratings

The thing about advanced active and passive safety features is that no driver ever wants to put them to the test—but they need to be sure they work! The 2017 Honda Fit safety features have been run through the wringer.

Both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have tested Fit models year after year for crash performance; here are their latest results for Honda’s hatchback:

Honda Fit

NHTSA: The 2017 Honda Fit earned a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Safety Rating due to excellent scores in all subcategories.* The NHTSA awarded the 2017 Fit perfect 5-star ratings in Front Driver Crash Test, Front Passenger Crash Test, Front Side Crash Test, Rear Side Crash Test, and their newer Side Pole Crash Safety Rating.

Honda Fit

IIHS: We’re still waiting for the IIHS to test the 2017 model, but the 2016 Honda Fit earned ratings of “Good”—their highest score—on Moderate Overlap Front, Side Impact, Roof Strength, and Head Restraint tests.

We hope you never need to do your own crash test of the Fit, but we think it’s clear that its design and safety features will do their best to protect you.
