2019 Honda Insight Parked at a mountain lookout

There’s no denying that the 2019 Honda Insight is an exciting addition to Honda’s hybrid lineup, but our friends and neighbors in the Capital Region still want to know: how well does the Honda Insight’s MPG compare to that of top competitors? The Toyota Prius’ MPG puts it near the top of its class. Nevertheless, with 55 mpg in the city and 49 mpg on the highway,* this year’s Insight has what it takes to dethrone its longtime competitor. Although the Prius One offers similar mileage with 54 mpg city and 50 mpg highway, it can’t compete with the Insight in other areas.

Performance and Interior: Prius vs. Insight

Total System Horsepower Electric Motor Torque Starting Price
2019 Honda Insight LX 151 hp 197 lbs.-ft. $22,830 MSRP**
2018 Toyota Prius One 121 hp 120 lbs.-ft. $23,475 MSRP

Since both the Insight and the Prius offer similar MPG, drivers will have to look to other areas to learn which model brings more to the table. As it happens, the Honda Insight wins out—by significant margins—in both horsepower and torque, and these specs translate directly to a better drive. The experts at Car and Driver had the chance to experience both of these vehicles, and they wrote, “where the Toyota felt harsh and loose on rough pavement or when crossing over train tracks, the Honda Insight felt stable, well-damped and nicely controlled.” You’ll notice the difference every time you get on the road!

The difference between these vehicles’ starting prices may not seem too significant on the surface, but when you factor in each model’s interior offerings, it’s easy to see where the Insight wins. As the writers at Car and Driver note, the Insight’s interior is “all very conventional when compared with the Prius’ bizarre, plasticky Voltron-inspired motif, but it’s appealingly clean, contemporary and very well executed.” If you also consider the Insight’s wide array of standard and available technology features, it’s this competition’s clear winner.
