The Best Cars for the Money from Honda

  • 2016 Honda Odyssey

If you’re looking for the best cars for the money around Albany, we think you should be looking to the brand that has built itself up as one of the most dependable and affordable automakers in the past 40 years: Honda. The best way to experience a new Honda is to get behind the wheel, but we’ve broken down what we think makes Honda vehicles some of the best cars for the money, with the awards and specs to back it up.

So before you visit a Capital Region Honda Dealer for a test drive, see just what it is that has made Honda models so popular among our Albany area drivers.

Reliability

Measuring the reliability of brand-new cars is pretty much impossible, but what we can do is measure how reliable older versions of those vehicles are and look at how dependable the brand is as a whole. Organizations like J.D. Power and Associates put out regular reliability studies, and other car news sites assemble lists of dependable used cars. We’ve brought together two of the many reports that indicate Honda vehicles are built to be reliable:

  • J.D. Power and Associates evaluates the dependability of vehicles every year, looking toward models that were from three model years prior (so their 2016 reliability study looks at 2013 models), asking owners about the number of problems and repairs that the vehicles needed. The 2013 Honda Fit took the top spot in the small car class, which speaks well for the current model (see how the 2016 Fit compares to the 2016 Kia Rio residual value).
  • Cars Direct made a list of the six most reliable used cars, and two of them were Honda models (the Civic and the Accord). Here’s what they had to say about Honda’s famous small car: “The Honda Civic is by far one of the highest rated small cars in terms of dependability and reliability. [It] offers excellent fuel economy and is well-known for being a vehicle that requires little maintenance, other than regular oil changes.” For long-term affordability, compare the 2016 Civic to the 2016 Ford Fiesta mpg ratings.

While small vehicles like these have certainly become well-regarded for their high value and low maintenance and repair requirements, the Civic and Fit are just two of the current Honda models. The new 2016 Honda HR-V is built on the same platform as the Fit and has little trouble leaving its competition looking outdated (see for yourself how the 2015 Nissan Juke standard features compare).

Value

There’s no hard and fast way to measure value in the auto world, because different drivers will have different stats and specs they prioritize. The 2016 Pilot outclasses the 2016 Nissan Pathfinder standard features, which certainly gives it an advantage, but what if you’re looking for superior fuel economy or a high residual value instead? We’ve got a few brand awards that identify Honda as a smart choice for drivers concerned with value on the whole.

  • Kelley Blue Book named four Honda vehicles in their 2016 Best Buy Awards,* with the 2016 Civic Sedan not only earning the 2016 Best Buy Award in the small car category but for the whole of the auto world, earning the Best Overall Buy award.** Other winners included the 2016 Pilot, Odyssey, and CR-V.
  • U.S. News & World Report compiles a list of Best Brands every year, and for 2016 they named Honda the “Best SUV Brand,” saying that Honda SUVs are “a smart buy no matter what kind of SUV consumers are looking for. Reviewers are particularly impressed with the Pilot’s spacious third row, upscale interior materials and numerous interior storage spaces.”

Price

Honda has built a reputation for value, and when looking at the best cars for the money, value and price are very closely related. When you look at the way the 2016 Nissan Quest standard features compare to the Odyssey or how the 2016 CR-V looks when placed side by side with the 2016 Nissan Rogue standard features, it would be easy to think that these kinds of advanced features packages place the CR-V or the Odyssey out of reach of the average budget. Yet we think the prices of these vehicles say something different.
